Flame Shield

Flame Shield briefly strengthens the physical defense of the caster or a visible ally against melee attacks. Its name may suggest dangerous flames, but under the rules it provides protection. It does not itself damage the attacker, an important distinction when deciding how the protected hero will act in a close confrontation.

It is best timed for two rounds in which pressure from melee combat is expected. Attacks from other directions or of other kinds are not automatically covered by the same benefit. The spell does not stack and has a limited number of uses per combat. Its benefit should therefore be assessed alongside the target's other defenses and the whole party's plan.

Exact effect: The target gains +2 PDEF only against melee attacks. The shield itself does not damage the attacker. Bonus: +2 PDEF. Target: caster or 1 ally within sight. Duration: 2 rounds. Restrictions: once per combat; does not stack. Using it requires at least Intelligence 8 and Level 2, the appropriate casting ability, and knowledge of this spell. Meeting the numerical requirements alone does not grant knowledge of the spell.

Meeting requirements is not enough

Min. INT and Min. Level only allow a spell to be learned. The character must actually acquire it through leveling, a teacher, a book, a scroll, a reward, a discovery, or the story.
