Undead Challenge 3

Ghost

A ghost is the lingering, incorporeal presence of a person or another being whose story remained unfinished after death. A place, an object, an unfulfilled promise, or a violent deed may bind it. In Elaria, ghosts appear in houses, on old roads, and among ruins where the living overlooked an event that remained crucial to the dead. A chill, a recurring sound, or an appearing figure may point to the final moments of its life.

Its level of awareness varies. One ghost can speak and learn new facts, while another simply repeats an event or responds to a particular stimulus. It is usually connected to its own past, but may be influenced by a curse or someone else's magic. It need not be aggressive: it may seek a witness, protect a place, or try to warn others of danger. Visitors' fear and misunderstanding of its actions can turn a message into a conflict.

Incorporeal reduces each instance of physical damage by two, while magical damage is not reduced. A ghost is therefore not completely invulnerable, but ordinary weapons lose effectiveness against it. The party can try to discover its name, the cause of its death, and the meaning of its recurring manifestation. Fulfilling a promise or uncovering the truth may bring peace if this fits the particular story. A reasoning ghost can provide information the living lack, but should not automatically know everything that has happened since its death.
