Monster Challenge 4

Young Dragon

A young dragon is already a very dangerous being, but is still gaining experience and establishing its own position. In Elaria, it seeks a remote lair in mountains, ruins, or deep forests, with room and supplies. It may belong to a dragon lineage that has long controlled the territory, or be an individual driven from its home. The first objects collected in its lair may reveal what it values and where it comes from.

It is intelligent and can learn from conversations and conflicts. It often acts alone, but may seek an older dragon's recognition, alliances, or servants of its own. It wants safety, food, and control over its territory. Youth may bring curiosity, pride, and poor judgment of consequences. Stealing supplies or threatening a settlement may be a calculated attempt to gain power or a reckless effort to imitate an older relative.

Once per battle, Dragon Breath allows a magical attack against up to two targets, while Dragon Scales reduces the first instance of physical damage each round. The particular dragon determines the nature of its breath; there is no need to assume that all share the same element. The party can negotiate territorial boundaries, uncover why the young dragon's behavior changed, or offer a way out of a dangerous dispute. Direct confrontation requires prepared defenses and a retreat. An agreement may be possible if the dragon sees a real benefit and need not interpret it as public humiliation.
