Monster Challenge 5
A hydra is a massive, many-headed monster that seeks wetlands, flooded caves, and remote valleys with abundant food. In Elaria, its origins are associated with ancient watery depths and places marked by powerful magic. Torn-up banks, several attack marks on a single prey animal, and an unusually deserted watering place may reveal its hunting grounds. Its presence can close an entire important route.
It usually lives alone, asserting itself through its size and several heads watching different directions. This does not imply several independent personalities capable of human conversation. It behaves as a dangerous hunter and defender of its territory, requiring large amounts of food. A particular story may connect it to a keeper, a curse, or the protection of an ancient site; any means of directing it must be explained, since an ordinary monster has no reason to obey strangers' orders.
Many Heads allows it to attack two different targets each round, both with a weakened attack. Tenacious Necks reduces the first two instances of damage each round by three, so the hydra's defenses do not rely solely on its high HP. The rules do not automatically grant regrowing heads or a mandatory weakness to fire. The party may need to prepare a crossing, secure an escape route, and discover why the hydra moved toward a settlement. Luring it away from the road or resolving the original environmental disturbance can be a complete expedition objective.
