Monster Challenge 5

Chimera

A chimera is a monster whose body combines features of several different creatures. In Elaria, its creation is attributed to wild magic, ancient experiments, and regions where the natural order has long been changing. It settles among remote rocks, in caves, and in ruins with plenty of space. Mismatched tracks and unusual remains of prey may confuse the party, as though several different predators inhabited the site.

Individual chimeras may differ in appearance, but this combat profile focuses on fierce physical attacks. It is usually a solitary hunter and defender of its territory. When seeking food, it uses strength, movement, and surprise; it need not be capable of complex human interactions. Anyone breeding or controlling it needs a specific means and purpose. Hunger, injury, or the loss of a lair may explain attacks beyond its original territory.

Once per battle, Double Strike allows two physical attacks in one turn, each with a reduced final attack result. The party must account for this sudden increase in pressure on its defenses. The profile does not automatically add dragon breath or other abilities associated with every possible head; those would belong to a special variant. Investigating the chimera's origins may lead to an abandoned laboratory or a disturbed site. A safe detour or removing the cause of its migration may save a nearby settlement without another direct confrontation.
