A basilisk is a dangerous scaled creature whose presence turns an ordinary exploration of ruins into an exceptionally cautious expedition. In Elaria, it inhabits rock cavities, dry ravines, and underground spaces. Tales link its origins to ancient magical transformations. An unusually empty territory, remains of prey, and figures resembling petrified witnesses may suggest it is nearby, but the particular site's history still needs investigation.
It generally lives alone and reacts as a hunter or a defender of its territory. It does not seek treasure for its monetary value or follow human orders without a special reason. It may remember safe hunting grounds and return to places where prey cannot escape. Keeping a basilisk as a guardian is dangerous for its keeper and may explain why the creature has appeared near an important building.
Once per battle, Petrifying Gaze attempts to overcome magical defense; an affected target cannot attack in the next round but defends normally, and the effect deals no damage. The basic profile does not make this permanent petrification. Magic Scales also increase the basilisk's magical defense. The party can seek a safe route or discover who brought the creature there. Legends about mirrors and similar tricks may inspire an attempt, but their effectiveness requires specific conditions established by the adventure.
Once per battle, makes a magical attack with a +3 bonus; if it overcomes the target's MDEF, the target cannot attack in the next round but defends normally. Deals no damage. Against magical attacks, the basilisk has +2 MDEF.
